McCartney’s parents, the photographer Linda and the Beatle Paul McCartney were both famously committed to each other and to vegetarianism, and raised their children accordingly. Stella McCartney has always refused to use fur or leather in her fashions, and she says few people even notice and even fewer care.

However, she told NBC that she has many critics who claim that she is limiting herself by not working with leather and by making sure she used only sustainable materials; “It’s been difficult. It continues to be difficult. But I’m okay with difficult. it keeps me on my toes. I’ve had people say to me, ‘You’ll never sell handbags. You don’t work with leather, and leather is luxury.”

However, Stella McCartney begs to differ, “To me, it’s the complete opposite. Leather is everywhere. It’s so cheap a material. It is so mass produced. Over 50 million animals a year are killed just for fashion. For me, it doesn’t have a luxury element to itlots of things have been around a long time, but that doesn’t mean they have to stick around forever. When you are in design, it is your job to change, to push to modernize.”

Stella McCartney isn’t discouraged by people telling her she “can’t” do things. When she started out as a fashion designer, she was told there were no British women who made it internationally as designers. So she filled the gap.
