Israel’s Antiquities Authority Dig Quest App Lets Kids Play Archeologist

Dig Quest

Israel’s Antiquities Authority has released a new app called Dig Quest that lets kids all over the world learn about the country’s archaeological sites.

The games in the App are designed around real discoveries and archaeological artifacts and were developed in collaboration with the IAA’s team of pre-eminent archaeologists, scholars and researchers. As they play, kids get a feel for what archaeologists do as they experience the excitement of discovery and the creativity and skills involved in solving mysteries from the distant past.

“Become an archeologist!” the website declares. Users of iPhones and iPads (it’s not yet available for Android) can use their devices as a toll to tap, dig, and explore Israel’s past. They can discover the Dead Sea Scrolls in an ancient cave and piece 14 of them together in a challenging puzzle game to reveal their meaning.

“Dig up the 2, 000 year old Lod Mosaic, ” it says, “then uncover its story in a fast-paced quiz game! You’ll need skills, creativity, and smarts to become a great archaeologist and unlock all the rewards.”

Players grow their own collection of antiquities as they master the two different games.

The games feature 30+ levels based on world-famous archaeological discoveries; 50+ stunning images of real antiquities; Historical facts and artifacts; spoken word excerpts from the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Gabe, the games’ host and team leader, is based on a composite of real archaeologists who work in the field.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are among the oldest biblical manuscripts and are considered the greatest manuscript discovery of the 20th century.

The Lod Mosaic is one of the largest, best preserved Roman mosaics ever found and is currently touring the world with stops at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, Waddeson Manor and the Hermitage. It was discovered in 1996 when a new highway was being constructed near the city of Lod and is 50 feet long and 27 feet wide. It took until 2009 to extract the Mosaic.

The games are for ages 7 and up.
