Director Ridley Scott picked an 11-year-old boy to portray the voice of God in his upcoming biblical movie “Exodus: Gods and Kings.”

Christian Bale a.k.a. Moses meets the boy, played by Isaac Andrews (a.k.a. Malak, which is, we assume, reference to malakh, messenger, which also means angel) by the burning bush.

From that point on, the boy appears from time to time to communicate with Moses, who figures out the boy has to be a messenger of God.

Scott explained: “Sacred texts give no specific depiction of God, so for centuries artists and filmmakers have had to choose their own visual depiction. Malak exudes innocence and purity, and those two qualities are extremely powerful.”

Rabbi David Baron, the production’s consultant on things Jewish, said, “They went off the biblical text, but the biblical text was very terse, ” adding that “anything that will result in people taking a second look at the text and engaging with the Bible” is worth it.

Fair enough.

“Exodus: Gods and Kings” also stars Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley, and will be released on December 12th.
