Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel might not be so popular these days, but he does have a lot of cash for his re-election. His campaign may be funded to the tune of $8 million, not counting secondary funds. Emanuel fans might have been heartened by the news that Chicago Board member Toni Preckwinkle won’t be jumping into the race, but there is a major threat to Rahm Emanuel’s campaign: Karen Lewis, President of the Chicago Teachers’ Union. She is willing to throw in $40, 000 of her own money into the contest, and it would not be too far-fetched to think the Union will donate $1 million.
National Teachers Union President Randi Weingarten said, “In a race like this, spending $1 million would not be unprecedented for the AFT.” Karen Lewis might be less heavily funded than Emanuel, but polls already show her with a 9 point lead over the Mayor.
