New York’s beloved former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who fought obesity by limiting how much soda a person could consume in a city eatery, is now throwing his weight and considerable wealth around the country—through his Independence USA—behind local, state and federal candidates who agree with Bloomberg on gun laws, education policy and marriage equality.

But every once in while, even good liberals make a boo boo, as in Independence USA’s $150, 000 television ads trying to defeat Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr., who’s being challenged by Milwaukee police Lt. Chris Moews, the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reports.
Sheriff Clarke is seeking his fourth term in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election.
Clarke has drawn strong support from the National Rifle Association, which sent out a fundraising appeal stating: “Make no mistake: Sheriff Clarke is fighting the re-election battle of his life right now because he dared to stand on principle by standing up for you, me and the NRA.”
No Republicans are running in this primary, so the democratic winner on Tuesday will be elected, barring unforeseen events.
Clarke pissed off Michael Bloomberg, who works tirelessly to align mayors and police chiefs against the NRA: in April, Clarke was invited to be a featured speaker at the opening of the NRA convention in Indianapolis, where he spoke against the efforts to restrict gun owners’ rights, including limits on magazine capacity and background checks.
Clarke’s been condemned by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who is a member of Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, after Clarke had run a public service announcement which urged residents to take gun safety courses so that they can protect themselves.
The thing is, Clarke is also an African American, and Bloomberg should have looked at his picture before deciding to come down on him like a ton of NY City bricks. Because now Citizens for Urban Justice has purchased radio ads in support of Clarke, in stations that target African-American listeners.
