In what was ultimately a surprise result Indianapolis-based, veteran pop singer Josh Kaufman was proclaimed the winner of  the 2014 version of “The Voice “, coming from behind to edge out stronger favorites  Christina Grimmie and Jake Worthington in the nationwide finale screened  late on Tuesday evening, with his show stopping version of Stevie Wonder’s ” Signed, Sealed and Delivered.”

Much nearer forty than fourteen, and far from being a typical stereotype of a pop idol, the 38-year-old fedora wearing father of three  had been plying his trade over the last 10 years and more than the live music bars in his home city of Indianapolis and around the state of Indiana before taking a chance and applying for an audition for the season’s “The Voice “.

Offering a unique version of white Jewish soul, Kaufman steadily worked his way through the ranks of  thousands competing in the highly popular annual competition, continuously impressing the multi-millions who tuned in to watch the show and ultimately gave Josh their votes.

Kaufman also succeeded in making a major impression with “The Voice’s “team of celebrity judges, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher, from the moment he made his first appearance on the show in March the 10th, when he had the audience on their  feet with  a tremendous performance of George Michael’s “One More Try”.

According to the format of  “The Voice”, when any  contestant begins their debut performance on the show,  all  four judges sit with their backs to the stage.  If they  like the sound of what they are hearing, they can choose to rotate their chair, in the process guaranteeing the contestant a place in the next round of the show, and agreeing to sponsor or adopt the act.

In Kaufman’s case, all of the four judges turned to face him, which is the best possible outcome for a contestant it also means that all of them have to convince Kaufman to choose  them  to be their coach and sponsor. After taking some time to make his decision  Josh chose vocalist Adam Levine.

That situation had to change during the “head to head rounds” of the competition when Josh had to look for another sponsor when he lost out  to Delvin Choice during the duet stage, although  he was soon scooped up by Usher

Josh continued to impress throughout the competition, making it to the final three  finals and eventually taking 35% of the vote, to narrowly ease out Christina Grimmie and Jake Worthington by a couple of points

In its six years “The Voice” has become one of the leading live reality television shows in the United States as well as being syndicated across the world, including in Israel. The show was a surprise winner at last year’s Emmy Awards easy out “The Amazing Race” in the Best Reality-Competition Program category.
