Jake Silverstein, one of the publishing industry’s most talented editors has landed a top job of chief editor for the New York Times Magazine, surprisingly beating out two of the most natural candidates for the position, the magazine’s current deputy editors Lauren Kern and Joel Lovell.
The New York Times Magazine is a major institution having appeared as a Sunday magazine supplement since 1896 and over the years has attracted some of the leading lights in writing and photography. Silverstein will be joining the New York Times after six highly successful years as chief editor of the Austin-based Texas Monthly, during which time the magazine was nominated for 12 National Magazine Awards, winning four of them, including the highly prestigious general excellence prize. A recent feature in the Texas monthly, “The 50 Best BBQ Joints … in the World!, ” was a recent nominee for a 2014 National Magazine award.
In a recent interview discussing his appointment on his new role at the New York Times Magazine, Silverstein confirmed his thoughts that this is a remarkable moment for the magazine to commit to the kind of long-form and thought-provoking journalism that has made the magazine one of the most influential publications throughout its almost 120 year history.
In addition to the weekly Magazine supplement, the New York Times also publishes a monthly magazine. The monthly version which enjoys a paid circulation of around 300, 000, has earned many plaudits over the years thanks to its high standard of narrative journalism as well as coverage of culinary pleasures and the arts.
According to Dean Baquet, managing editor of The New York Times newspaper, the thinking behind Jake Silverstein’s appointment is to initiate a process which may eventually see the magazines become much closer to the newspaper than they were when Hugo Lindgren was chief editor.
Discussing the implications of Jake’s appointment Dean Baquet pointed out that the magazine needs to become more a part of the life of the paper. “The editor needs to be much more of a visible presence in the newsroom and be in on the discussions of how we cover the big stories of the day, and will provide the magazine with a greater sense of urgency.” Baquet further explained
According to the New York Times the executive editor, Jill Abramson, under Jake Silverstein’s editorship the magazine will undergo something of a revamp “including hiring and transferring some of our best writers and provocative voices who will be focused on inventing new ways of telling magazine stories.”
Jake Silverstein is due to fill the chief editor’s chair was in the coming weeks, moving his young family from his home in Austin, Texas, to New York with his wife and two young sons.
Jake Silverstein graduated from the Michener Center for Writers, at the University of Texas at Austin with a master of fine arts degree in creative writing.
Jake began his professional career in the late nineteen nineties, working on the reporting staff at the Big Bend Sentinel, a weekly newspaper in Marfa, Texas, where he was to remain till 2005 when he became a contributing editor to Harper’s Magazine. The following year, Silverstein joined the staff of the Texas Monthly magazine in the role of senior editor, being promoted to chief editor in 2008.
During the five years that Jake Silverstein was chief editor of the Texas Monthly magazine, it was a nominee for eleven National Magazine Awards (the magazine industry’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize), winning twice, once for General Excellence and another for Feature Writing.
Silverstein is also a published author, with his first novel “ Nothing Happened and Then It Did: A Chronicle in Fact and Fiction”, being released in 2010, published by W.W. Norton.
Silverstein shared was a joint winner of the National Magazine Award for Feature Writing in 2010 for his article entitled, “Still Life – the story of John McClamrock.”
