According to information recently released by Sony Pictures, before American Hustle makes the Oscars is already broken a couple records for Megan Ellison and David O. Russell.
American Hustle which has already been nominated for no less than ten Academy Awards, amongst them for the best movie, has already passed a significant milestone for Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, becoming the company’s highest-grossing movie, both in the United States as well as internationally, surpassing the remarkable achievement of Zero Dark Thirty, released by the company in 2012 which drew a total of $133 million worldwide when released by Sony Pictures in 2012.
Even before it is going to be the center of attraction at the Oscars , American Hustle with an all-star cast, including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence, all four of them Oscar nominees for their parts in the movie, has pulled in just under $140 million in box office receipts in North America, which is a career-best for David O. Russell, already over the $132 that he drew last year for Silver Linings Playbook.
On the international front, American Hustle has already taken in well over $60 million, despite not reaching some of its largest potential markets such as Russia, Germany and South Korea.
Ms. Ellison is reportedly not resting on her laurels instead heavily involved in the development of what looks like being her next movie project, “The Boy Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” to be based on the life of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Megan Ellison attended film school at the University of Southern California before beginning her career in the movie industry in 2006 when she co-produced Waking Madison with writer and director Katherine Brooks. Megan was involved in the production of another couple of movies during 2008 and 2009 which failed to make much impact either critically or at the box office. Our first breakthrough as a producer came when she tied up with Joel and Ethan Coen to produce a remake of the cowboy classic True Grit which found major commercial and critical success when it was first released at the end of 2010.
Thanks to an injection of capital from Larry Ellison, Megan began to take on larger productions the next being when she partnered with Michael Benaroya to produce Catch .44 which starred Bruce Willis and Forest Whitaker. Following fast on the footsteps of that film’s success Megan released Lawless, a powerful Prohibition-era crime drama starring Shia LeBouef.
