Sam Altman’s OpenAI released its new chatbot called OpenAI o1. The new service, says the company, can reason through math and science and is a “new series of reasoning models for solving hard problems.”
OpenAI o1 is a new series of AI models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. These models can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and math. o1 models are better at understanding and reasoning through complex problems. They can solve harder problems in science, coding, and math. o1 models are more accurate than previous models. o1 models are faster than previous models.
These enhanced reasoning capabilities are particularly beneficial for tackling complex problems in fields like science, coding, and math. For instance, o1 can be used by healthcare researchers to annotate complex cell sequencing data. Also, physicists to generate intricate mathematical formulas for quantum optics and developers across various fields to build and execute multi-step workflows.

ChatGPT Plus and Team users can now access both o1-preview and o1-mini. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access early next week. OpenAI plans to extend o1-mini access to all free ChatGPT users but hasn’t announced a specific date.
Developer access to o1 is significantly more costly: o1-preview costs $15 per 1 million input tokens and $60 per 1 million output tokens in the API. In comparison, GPT-4o costs $5 per 1 million input tokens and $15 per 1 million output tokens.
“With previous models like ChatGPT, you ask them a question and they immediately start responding,” Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist told the New York Times. “This model can take its time. It can think through the problem — in English — and try to break it down and look for angles in an effort to provide the best answer.”
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research and implementation organization based in the United States. It was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and several others. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all humanity.
Sam Altman has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine and one of the “Best Young Entrepreneurs in Technology” by Businessweek. He is also the founder of the Long Term Future Fund, a venture capital fund that invests in companies working to solve long-term problems like climate change and pandemics.
