Robbie Keane, the legendary Irish soccer (football) star, has signed on to be the new head coach of the Israel Premiere League’s Maccabi Tel Aviv.

“I am happy to take on this challenge at Maccabi,” Robbie Keane was quoted on Maccabi Tel Aviv’s club website. “My team and I are already looking forward to starting work and we are confident in our ability to do what is necessary to prepare.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s owner, Mitch Goldhar, added, “Robbie brings the mentality, character, energy and focus of a winner, traits he exhibited everywhere he played. These characteristics now combined with ambitions to succeed as a coach are aligned with our objectives at Maccabi.”

Keane takes over in Tel Aviv after most recently serving as assistant manager with England’s Leeds. He stepped down from that position in May after the club was subjected to relegation. At the time Keane said, “My time at Leeds was very enjoyable, in terms of the experience and being back at my old club. There are really good people there, good staff. It’s a club that’s got a great history. Unfortunately, we probably came in a little bit too late. It would have been nice if we’d have got in there earlier, I think it would have been a lot different.”

Robert David Keane (born 8 July 1980) is an Irish professional football coach and former player who played as a striker.

Robbie Keane served as captain of the Republic of Ireland from March 2006 until his international retirement in August 2016. Keane is the most capped player and is the top goal scorer in the team’s history.

Keane scored 68 goals for the Republic of Ireland national team over an 18-year international career, making him the all-time record Irish scorer. His 146 caps is also an Irish record. Keane is the joint fifth-highest European international goal scorer of all time, and the only player in the history of world football to have scored at least one international goal in 19 consecutive years.

Robbie Keane was the Republic of Ireland’s top scorer at the 2002 FIFA World Cup with three goals as they reached the last 16, and also played at UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016.

Keane began his career at Nottingham Forest, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2002. He spent 10 years at Spurs, scoring 126 goals in 256 appearances. Keane then had spells at Liverpool, West Ham United, Aston Villa, Los Angeles Galaxy, and Melbourne City. He retired from playing in 2018.

Robbie Keane has since worked as a coach, most recently as an assistant manager at Middlesbrough.
Keane is a highly decorated player, having won numerous individual and team awards. He is a Premier League champion, an FA Cup winner, a League Cup winner, and a FIFA Club World Cup winner. He was also named FAI Senior International Player of the Year a record 11 times.

Robbie Keane is considered to be one of the greatest Irish footballers of all time. He is a prolific goal scorer with a natural ability to find the net. He is also a strong leader and a great team player.
