Is George Santos Even Jewish?

George Santos, the newly elected U.S. Congressman from Long Island, continues to get caught in one lie or another. Now, it turns out, that he lied about his grandparents being Holocaust survivors. So, now people are wondering if Santos has any Jewish roots at all.

According to George Santos’ official biography on his website, “George’s grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and again fled persecution during WWII. They were able to settle in Brazil, where his mother was born. His father, who comes from Angolan roots, was also born in Brazil. Both his mother and father legally immigrated to the United States in search of the American dream, where they began their new lives on the foundations of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

But did this ever happen?

According to a report in the Jewish publication “The Forward,” website myheritage.com lists Santos’ maternal grandparents as having both been born in Brazil before the Nazis rose to power. And the paper also pointed out that there is no proof that George Santos’ mother was Jewish at all. Just the opposite, actually. There is a great deal of evidence that she never claimed any Jewish ancestry.

The new leader of Congressional Democrats Hakeem Jeffries of New York said of George Santos, “His whole life. Made up,” And Jeffries posed a direct question to Santos himself: “Did you perpetrate a fraud on voters of the Third Congressional District of New York?”

Matt Brooks, director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, told the New York Times about George Santos, “These allegations, if true, are deeply troubling. Given their seriousness, the congressman-elect owes the public an explanation, and we look forward to hearing it.”

The New York Times further alleged that George Santos may have fabricated some of his claims about his business The Devolder Organization. Santos also made claims about working for financial firms Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, but neither has any record of his ever having been employed by them.

None of this is enough, however, to prevent George Santos from taking up his seat in the House in January. But it does make the Republicans look bad.
