Global Firepower (GFP) released its annual ranking and data concerning 140 modern military powers.

The GFP ranking is based on each nation’s possibility of conventional warfare capacity on land, sea, and air.

The results provide an interesting window into an increasingly volatile global landscape where war appears all but inevitable.

According to GFT no military in the world comes close to China’s in terms of manpower. estimates that the People’s Republic of China has approximately 2 million active military personnel. In comparison, the United States has a substantially smaller military – 1.4 million – but when it comes to the overall strength of the world’s military forces, the US comes out on top, ahead of Russia and China, which finish in second and third place, respectively.

With Russia’s military buildup around Ukraine and the Kremlin’s more confrontational posture, the likelihood of at least one of the world’s most powerful militaries engaging in a major new battle appears to be at an all-time high.

Diplomatic efforts have thus far been unsuccessful, and it is now unclear how Russia will respond.

Elsewhere, the possibility of China and the US colliding in some way over Taiwan remains a constant threat.

The index “computes a nation’s PowerIndex score based on over 50 separate characteristics ranging from military might and financial stability to logistical competence and location.” While a rating of 0.000 represents the ideal score, it is regarded impossible in practice.
