Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer Readies To Lead Opposition to President Trump

“I am ready for a fight.”

Charles Schumer rallies the troops

With just days left before the inauguration, Senator Charles Schumer of New York is rallying his troops in opposition to the soon to be President Donald Trump. This is his job now, after all, since he is the Democratic Party’s new leader in the U.S. Senate.

Senator Schumer has renewed his calls for ethics inquiries into a number of Trump appointees, specifically Congressman Tom Price the Secretary of Health and Human Services designee. Price has been under fire for his stock picks which some say point to possible insider trading.

About Price, Schumer commented on Twitter, “The President-elect claims he wants to drain the swamp, but Congressman Price has spent his career filling it up.”

CNN reported that Tom Price bought as much as $15, 000 worth of shares in Zimmer Biomet in March of 2015, only days before he introduced new legislation which would have benefited that company. And that’s not all. Congressman Price is also alleged to have made $300, 000 worth of trades in companies concurrent to his working on legislation which would have affected them.

The Senate Minority leader has also been critical of his Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives for their moves to undo standing ethics regulations and the Congress’ own oversight committees.

While speaking at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Martin Luther King Day Monday, Senator Charles Schumer had some very harsh words for Donald Trump who will become the 45th President of the United States in just three days time. About the election results, the Observer quoted Charles Schumer as telling the audience, “I know many of you are despairing. My daughters came to me weeping after the election results came in.”

The Senate Minority Leader also told the crowd that he was “ready for the fight” in the public and political arenas with Donald Trump and Schumer also came to the defense of Congressman John Lewis, who Trump criticized on Twitter. He called Lewis, “a great hero whose picture is right there, I said to John, ‘I have your back. We’re all behind ya. I am ready for the fight.’ Are you?”

But there is at least one area where Senator Charles Schumer does seem to be in agreement with President Elect Trump — China. The two have hard harsh word’s for the Chinese government and have both promised to do something about its practices which allow for the country to have a huge trade surplus with the United States.

Senator Schumer released a statement in which he took credit for pushing Federal authorities to take action against China for “dumping” its government subsidized aluminium on international markets thereby engaging in unfair trade practices.

“We have all seen first-hand the impact of China’s subsidized expansion on our communities and workers, ” said Schumer. “My message to the incoming Administration is clear: you must continue this push and aggressively press China on their predatory trade practices.”

It sounds like Charles Schumer may already be thinking about a run in 2020.
