Good News Game Of Thrones Fans: More Episodes and More Show

Game Of Thrones possible spin off

Cultural Phenomenon Game Of Thrones has conquered the world. Its fans are as devoted — and as nutty — as Star Trek fans. Its books have sold millions of copies around the world and the HBO show is one of the most popular TV series in history.

While no Jews feature in its starring cast which by now includes thousands, it was created by two Jews who both write and produce Game of Thrones: D. B. Weiss and David Benioff. The show is based on the books by George R.R. Martin and you know that Martin is a great writer because he has two middle initials.

So the good news for these millions of Game of Thrones-ers, or Thronsies, or whatever they are called is that HBO is not just considering the possibility of a spin off of the show, but may also commit to more than just the six episodes originally announced for its final season coming in 2018.

Fans of Game of Thrones everywhere went into a state of mourning after it was first announced that HBO would only offer shortened seasons for its seventh and eighth (and final) seasons on the air. And to add insult to injury, bad weather in Europe delayed production on season seven so its premiere was delayed from the usual February until June.

There have been rumors of a Game of Thrones prequel series for some time now. It would make sense since the books are filled with the back stories and the histories of Westeros, including the story of the Targaryen conquest and how the first men defeated the white walkers and built the wall more than a thousand years ago. Confused? Well you wouldn’t be if you watched the show.

Variety quoted HBO original programming president Casey Bloys who spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.

“All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying, ‘Oh, let’s do this, ’” he said. “But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it. It’s a really rich world. We’d be foolish not to look at it.”

And that’s not all Bloys had to say. He also told TVLine that the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones may have more than just the previously announced six episodes. “The only thing we’re working out is how many episodes they want to do, ” said Bloys.

“They’re still figuring it out because I think they’re trying to get a shape of the season. They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It’s all about how many they’re comfortable [with]. But I’ll always take more.”

The seventh and penultimate season of Game of Thrones is currently scheduled to premiere on June 25.
