Since it was founded in San Francisco in August 2008, Airbnb has developed a truly global presence. These days, the website boasts over 2 million listings in 191 countries around the world. Apartments and rooms are available in at least 34, 000 cities, but which destinations are proving the most popular? According to Airbnb, Paris is the service’s premier city with 78, 000 listings, beating second placed London’s 47, 000. This may change, however, with authorities in the French capital set to clamp down on hosts who breach the city’s housing regulations. Somebody renting their home for more than four months or a home that is not their primary residence must register it as a commercial property and apply for a change of use permit.
Breaching the rules could result in a fine of up to €25, 000. According to the Guardian, up to 41 percent of Airbnb listings in Paris were rented out for longer than 120 days a year or by a host with multiple listings on the website. New York follows closely behind London in the popularity stakes with 46, 000 listings. The website will be in demand ahead of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and visitors will be able to choose from about 33, 000 rooms and apartments in the Brazilian city.
