A photo of a pig with blue fat has the internet abuzz. The photo, which was posted to Imgur, has already had over 1 million views. Hundreds of people have commented with possible reasons why the pig’s fat is a bright blue.
The photo was posted to Imgur by a person with the username GlendilTEK. The person titled the image Weird Pig, reports NBC.
GlendilTEK states on Imgur that the pig was shot on a ranch in Morgan Hill, California. The pig was not raised on the ranch, but instead was a wild pig.

“So, my in-laws live on a ranch in Morgan Hill, California and they shot a wild pig on it. They thought it a normal pig until they cut it open, ” GlendilTEK wrote. “When they cut into the pig they found that the fat on the pig was a fluorescent blue.”
As the photo began to go viral, GlendilTEK added the following to his post: “Just to clarify since there has been questions they did not start cutting open the pig until they had strapped it to the ATV and driven back home so most of the blood has left the pigs body at this point.”
GlendilTEK also states that no one at the ranch can explain why the pig’s fat is blue. “Everything else about the pig was normal, the meat, blood, etc. The only weird part was the blue fat throughout the body.”
GlendilTEK adds that the pig was healthy in every way and the only issue with the pig is the blue colored fat. The pig showed no outward signs of health issues, reported AOL.
“I know blue pigmentation is often caused from copper poisoning but all that they have are some old mercury mine shafts that they have filled in, ” GlendilTEK added. “They have also shot wild pigs on the ranch before and none of them have been blue.”
According to GlendilTEK, the ranchers plan on sending a sample of the pig’s fat to UC Davis so it can be analyzed.
After seeing photos of the pig, Andrew Hughan, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said they have “occasionally seen cases where wild pigs have exhibited similar discoloration of their insides. In those cases, it was determined the affected animals had likely consumed chemicals that contained a blue dye.”
Hughan added: “Pigs eat pesticides and rodenticides, and it stains the fat of the pig. We recommend not eating the animal, and you should try to dispose of it so it doesn’t get back into the environment.”
