The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Monday the death of Ismail Barhoum, Hamas’s Gaza Prime Minister, in a targeted assassination in Khan Yunis the previous day. Barhoum had been using the cover of Nasser Hospital for his base of operations.

This came just a day after the IDF eliminated the deputy commander of Hamas’ Gaza Brigade, Ahmad Salman ‘Awj Shimali, who was responsible for operations, planning Hamas’ offensive strategy, and building the brigade’s force in preparation for the brutal massacre on Oct 7.

The Israeli military also killed the commander of Hamas’ Shejaiya Battalion, Jamil Omar Jamil Wadiya, who was responsible for deploying the battalion’s forces against IDF troops and operated to restore and reorganize the battalion.

Barhoum’s elimination marks a significant development in Israel’s ongoing operations against Hamas leadership in Gaza. The strike is part of Israel’s broader military strategy to dismantle key figures within the organization.

“Barhoum was a central figure in the organization’s political bureau and in making decisions that directly influenced Hamas’s terrorist activity against IDF forces in the Gaza Strip,” the IDF said. “He was in charge of managing the terrorist organization’s finances in the Gaza Strip, including routing funds for Hamas’ military wing to plan and execute terrorist plots against the State of Israel. These funds financed the organization’s continued survival in the Gaza Strip and were used for terrorist activity and the purchase of weapons, which posed a threat to the citizens of the State of Israel.”

Ismail Barhoum was a member of Hamas’s political wing and was involved in the group’s financial operations, according to the European Union, which sanctioned him last year.

“This is another example of how the Hamas terrorist organization systematically violates international law and takes over civilian infrastructure in a way that prevents the possibility of rehabilitation for the public in Gaza, while cruelly exploiting the population as human shields for its operations,” the IDF added in comment on how Ismail Barhoum hid in a hospital.

This is why, the IDF explained, the strike that killed Ismail Barhoum was conducted following an extensive intelligence-gathering process and with precise munitions in order to mitigate harm to the surrounding environment as much as possible.
