At the end of 2023, Israel’s total population stands at 9.842 million people, according to the data released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics.
This may not seem like such a large increase in people year to year. But even when deducting new immigrants, the rate is still twice that of the worldwide increase of 0.88% as reported by Macrotrends.
Of this number, 8 million are Jews, comprising 73.2% of the total population. There are also 2.080 million Arabs, comprising 21.1% of the country’s total population (Arabs include both Christians and Muslims). The remaining 0.554 million Israelis, 5.7% of the population, were classified as “other.”

During the year 2023 the population of Israel grew by 1.9%, of which 72% resulted from new births. The remaining 28% of this increase was attributed to immigration.
The growth rate in the population decreased compared to the year 2022 when it was 2.2%.
The Central Bureau of Statistics attributed the decrease in population growth mainly to the decrease in the total number of immigrants to Israel in 2023 compared to 2022.
During the year, approximately 179,000 babies were born (73.3% to Jewish mothers, 24.1% to Arab mothers and 2.6% to others).
During the year 2023, approximately 45,000 new immigrants arrived in Israel, about 75% of whom came from Russia and Ukraine.
About 49,500 people died during the year and more than 2,500 Israelis were added to the list of those who have resided abroad for more than a year.
So, Israel’s population has increased by about 1,100 percent since its time of independence 75 years ago when the population was 872,000.
Most of the increase in population can be attributed to the immigration of Jews from around the world and their descendants. But due to the higher birth rate among Arabs, Israel’s Jewish population has shrunk in recent years as a percentage of the total.
