What Not to Do on a Plane

Like they say in some countries: Don’t drink the water.

There are plenty of things that one should never do on an airplane, and not just try to join the mile high club. There are all sorts of things flight attendants and travelers alike say are the worst behavior they have seen in the air, from not wearing any shoes or socks to sleeping with your feet over into the seat in front of you, to sneaking way to much carry on stuff onto the plane with you and leaving no room for others in the overhead bins and much, much more.

But now we can all add two things to the list of what not to do on an airplane: don’t wear shorts and don’t ever drink the water.

So, why not wear shorts on an airplane? No, it is not because of any rules of fashion, or anything like that. It’s because of your own personal health.

You see, the seats on airplanes are not cleaned regularly. Some people say you should even avoid the pillows and blankets for the very same reason. So all manner of bacteria can build up on the seat covers and so you have no idea what you might be getting on your skin. Have you ever gotten a rash after flying? Now you know what might have caused it.

Tommy Cimato is a long-time flight attendant who issued the warning about shorts on social media. On TikTok, he released a video saying, “Don’t or try not to wear shorts when on an airplane. You never know how clean it’s going to be, so if you’re wearing trousers you’re going to have fewer germs.”

And that’s not all. Tommy Cimsto also offered some hygiene advice when it comes to using the toilets.

“Do not ever push the flush button or lever with your bare hands,” he said.” It’s honestly just unsanitary and it’s pretty gross, so when you flush use a napkin or tissue.”

But that tidbit could also apply to any public bathroom.

And if you do need to use the plane’s facilities, try and do so early in the flight, preferably before anyone else. This is because they do clean them between flights.

As for the water, flight attendant Celina Bedding warned travelers never to drink the tap water on a plane. And that applies even when you are traveling on an economy flight and must pay however much for bottled water.

“For any passengers out there, whether you are a frequent flyer, an occasional flyer, seasonal flyer or will be a first-time flyer soon, I would like to say to you: NEVER drink tap water from the plane bathroom,” she told England’s The Mirror.

“Many studies have shown it’s not sanitary for drinking,” she added. “You may have seen the sign already as most planes have it by the tap. You may have thought it’s just a way to get you to buy a drink. But it’s actually for your own health. So definitely do not drink tap water on a plane.”

So, the next time you need to travel by airplane, keep all of this in mind.
