As part of Israel’s Minister of Transportation and Road Safety Miri Regev’s visit to Morocco, on Monday the Minister and her Moroccan counterpart, Mohamed Abdel Jalil, signed three new agreements between their two nations – one on driver’s license reciprocity, one on shipping and another on road safety innovations. This is a historic event as it marks the first time such agreements have ever been signed between the two nations and comes just a few years after Israel and Morocco first made peace as part of the Abraham Accords.
The first of the agreements signed between the transport ministers of Israel and Morocco is an agreement for the recognition and conversion of driver’s licenses, which will allow for the first time Israelis visiting or living in Morocco to drive with an Israeli driver’s license.
Transport Minister Miri Regev said of this, “The historic visit to Morocco has only just begun, and we are already seeing results. The professional teams of both ministries did serious preparatory work, and I found in my Moroccan colleagues a partner in the vision of regional peace of Prime Minister Netanyahu and King Hassan VI of Morocco. The mutual recognition of driver’s licenses will contribute to the strengthening of tourism and business relations between the countries, and to the deepening of acquaintance with the Moroccan people, whose generation of our parents and grandparents still remembers a life of friendship and good neighborliness by their side.”

The second agreement Miri Regev signed is a shipping agreement, which strengthens maritime trade relations between Israel and Morocco and encourages direct connections between the seaports in Morocco and the seaports in Israel. Also, the agreement will encourage the exchange of knowledge and experience in maritime logistics and ports, joint research and connections between shipping professionals from the two countries.
Another agreement relates to the issue of road safety and innovation, and establishes guidelines for cooperation in the field of transportation and road safety, in the issues of road safety management strategy, integration of innovative technologies, upgrading of data collection systems in the field of shipping, urban planning and infrastructure, accident investigation and promotion of research and innovation in the field of road safety.
In conclusion, Minister Miri Regev commented, “One of the Muslim commanders (Kaukji) said in the past, ‘He who controls the roads will win,’ this is not only a tactical statement but also a strategic statement for people’s ability to connect by sea, air and land.”
“To enable social leadership,” she added “dispersal of employment, getting to know different cultures and societies, connecting the periphery to the center. Building bridges both in reality and in hearts. That is why the Ministry of Transport is one of the most important economic and social ministries in my view. The connection to Morocco will also allow us a gateway to Africa.”
