Time Magazine released its list of the World’s Greatest Places to see in 2023 and the Tower David Citadel Museum in Jerusalem made the list. Time cited 50 different cities, and with Jerusalem, it wrote about the things to see from the streets of the city but singled out the David Citadel Museum.

“Those in the mood for a more rigorous afternoon of touristing,” wrote Time Magazine, “can work their way to the windy streets of the Old City for 360-degree views found at the recently renovated Tower of David Jerusalem Museum.”

To compile this list of the World’s Greatest Places, the top spots to visit this year, TIME solicited nominations of places from our international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.

The Tower of David Museum offers the entire history of the City of Jerusalem in a single place. The museum is located in the Tower of David Citadel, at the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City, the iconic symbol of Jerusalem, and uses innovative and exciting technology to tell the stories of more than 3,000 years.

The Tower of David itself is an old crusader fortress built in the Middle Ages. It is defined by a small cylindrical tower – a minaret, a Muslim symbol – built by Muslims after they reconquered Jerusalem. Like the Tower of London, there is no actual tower hovering above the city extending from the building.

David’s Citadel sits right at the spot where the Christian and Armenian Quarters meet and is the main gate used by pedestrians to enter the Old City when going on to the Jewish Quarter.

The Citadel, and the archaeological finds unearthed here, are part of the events that shaped the face of Jerusalem from the days of the kings of Biblical Judah until our own times. In 2014, the Tower of David Museum opened a new wing, the Kishle, in an old prison complex. A tour of the Kishle exposes the depth of history in Jerusalem and tells awe-inspiring stories about the many uses of this one space through history.

Throughout the year, the museum features changing exhibitions and cultural events and performances, which draw a wide range of visitors of every age, religion, and nationality. The core exhibition of the museum is presently closed due to a $50 million renovation project and a new exhibition will open in June.
