“Hanukkah on Rye” is a new Hanukkah TV movie coming from the Hallmark channel. It stars French-Israeli actress Yael Grobglas.
We are all quite familiar with Hallmark Christmas movies, and any Christmas movies in general. They all seem to have the same story or a variation of 3 main themes.
First, there is boy meets girl, boy doesn’t like girl or girl doesn’t like boy for some reason, but the Christmas spirit moves them in some way and they finally fall in love by the end of the movie. Then there are all the variations on the “Christmas Carol” story where a modern day Scrooge must learn to be nice, or remember something that he has forgotten that will change his life for the better, and so on and so forth. Then the evil, greedy businessman or the jerk, selfish boss will suddenly be nice to everyone.

Then there are the Christmas movies where someone visits their family in the small that they left behind and has to deal with some old family trauma that resurfaces, or finds out their 80 year old parents are getting divorced after 50 years, or they are in danger of losing the family business/farm etc., etc.
So, what could a Hanukah movie be like then?
Adam Sandler gave us a dud back in 2002 with his animated movie “Eight Crazy Nights.” That movie tells the story of Davey Stone, an alcoholic with a criminal record, is sentenced to community service under the supervision of an elderly referee. Somehow Davey learns the true spirit of Hanukah and changes his ways.
And then there were…
Well, that’s about it.
So, what will Hanukkah on Rye give us?
Well, the tagline is “Can a Hanukkah miracle keep fresh couple Molly and Jacob together after they realize that they are actually competing delicatessen owners?”
You see, the two were set up by a matchmaker and didn’t know they were competitors.
Do you want to bet they fall in love at the end?
