Mount Vernon is the historic estate where George Washington lived. As such, it is preserved as a historical landmark. But parts of the estate can be privately held and one such piece just sold for $50 million.

The purchase price set a record for the Washington D.C. area.

Heather Corey of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty which had the listing told Mansion Global “It’s the largest privately owned parcel of the original Mount Vernon estate.”

The property is known as the River View Estate. It was first put on the market in 2020 for as much as $60 million. The American Federal-style mansion was constructed in 2014 by Maryland–based architect Jim Rill and bought for $18.6 million by Robert Stevens, the former chairman and chief executive of Lockheed Martin, and his wife, Michelle.

The estate includes 16.5 acres of land. The mansion has 16,000 square feet, seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. It also features 400 feet of water frontage overlooking the Potomac River. The estate also comes with a three-bedroom, three-bath 2,600 square foot guest house.

The main house has a home gym with radius windows overlooking the Potomac, an adjacent spa area with a sauna and steam room and an indoor resistance pool, according to the listing. It also has a movie theatre, a reception room that leads to views of the gardens, and a game room with a full bar and a pool table.

And if that is not enough, the estate also boasts a carriage house with a four-car garage, a studio apartment, a long winding dock and several rose gardens.

The acreage is nothing when compared to the 1,800 acres encompassed by the whole of Mount Vernon. George Washington purchased the land in 1760 and the entire estate remained in the Washington family’s hands until 1859.
