Theresa May cannot trigger Brexit, says High Court
Campaigners win a landmark High Court victory over Theresa May on whether she has the right to fire the Brexit start gun.
In a dramatic High Court ruling, Lord Chief Justice Thomas said Theresa May cannot activate Brexit without putting it to a vote in the House of Commons.
May announced at the Conservative Party Conference in October she would ignite the official start of the two-year separation proceedings from the EU, Article 50, by the end of March.
The Government announced it would appeal against the ruling and the two sides will now prepare for another showdown at the Supreme Court in early December.
