She told Entertainment Weekly that it took her until the show’s seventh season to direct because she needed that long to get the guts just to ask to do so. Rossum studied cinematography at NYU. Emmy was also encouraged after seeing her co-star William H. Macy direct an episodes.

Rossum also spoke about the challenges that this episode had for a new director as it also introduced a new character on Shameless who is a trans person. Emmy said that, “the most exciting part about getting this episode to direct was that we are introducing our first trans character and I had a hand in casting that person.”

“It was really important to me that it was authentic. So I was incredibly touched and I just found great meaning in getting to introduce this character, especially because I think it’s such a hot-button issue right now. It feels like it’s very much in the zeitgeist and it feels like the audience that we have is very young and very diverse. I feel like it’s a new group of people that maybe don’t understand exactly all the facets of LGBTQ, and of course, we approach it with the same kind of Shameless humor and darkness that we do everything.”

Rossum was also sure to ask her fans opinion of the episode on Twitter:

Rossum told Variety that she “shadowed” Shameless directors on the set in order to learn how to do it.

“The first is the script, when you’re shooting it, and then when you’re editing it. I became infatuated with the whole process, ” said Rossum about the process of directing an episode of a television show.

“I felt like if I prepared my ass off and studied and took a cinematography course and did all the things that a Type A person would do and trusted my instincts, it might not be bad, ” she added.

And William H. Macy advised Emmy Rossum to be prepared for every single thing that she did on set. But she admitted that directing Macy was intimidating saying, “I was scared to direct Macy because he’s Macy. Macy doesn’t need to know what I think.”
