Reddit CEO: “We Know Your Dark Secrets, We Know Everything”

Huffman stokes controversy with "creepy" remark

“We know all of your interests. Not only just your interests you are willing to declare publicly on Facebook – we know your dark secrets, we know everything, ” said Steve Huffman, Reddit CEO in an interviw by Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten, at TNW Conference in Amsterdam on 26 May, when he was asked how the company planned to increase monetization of its content.

Targeting will be different than Facebook because Reddit knows even more about its users, he replied. He cited Facebook’s success in “making people accept in line native ads” but added that Reddit’s “targeting will be different” because it knows even more than Facebook about its users.

According to infowars when Van Zanten jokingly responded, “I’ll delete my accounts, ” Huffman responded, “Try it, you’ll be back.”

The community at Reddit was critical, and surprised, and the video of the interview quickly reached the #1 spot on the Reddit homepage and collected more than 6000 upvotes and 4800 comments  wrote  Van Zanten in an article published today.

Similar outrage erupted when Google CEO Erich Schmidt told CNBC in an interview, “If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”

Is that like the Target knowing the girl was pregnant before she even knew? Reddit knows he will love quilting, he just hasn’t tried it yet.


You’re mistaken. The girl already knew. Target knew before the girl’s dad because they tracked the girl’s browsing habits on their online store.
