America’s 2015 Marijuana Sales In Context

 Cannabis Clubs Boom In Barcelona

Last year, $3.4 billion of legal marijuana was sold in the United States. Legal in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and the District of Columbia, that’s a lot of green for just a few states. The best way to give that figure some proper perspective is by comparing it with some of the country’s best loved brands. Oreo is a good example. It had just over $700 million sales between April 2014 and April 2015 and weed sales were five times higher. In 2016, legal marijuana sales could be as high as $4.3 billion.

Marijuana Legalization Enjoys Surging Support in the U.S.

According to a Gallup poll, a clear majority of Americans favour legalizing marijuana for the very first time. In 2013, 58 percent of Americans stated the drug should be legalized, in stark contrast to 12 percent back in 1969 when Gallup first asked the question.

Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize the recreational use of marijuana over the course of the past 12 months, rounding off a period of resounding success for advocates.

Support for legalizing marijuana gradually increased over the last four decades, reaching 31 percent in 2000. Since then, it rose rapidly until a clear majority was reached in 2013. The successes in Washington and Colorado may have helped more people tolerate the notion of legal marijuana, alongside the fact that more Americans than ever have tried the drug.

Tiny Rhode Island is America’s Marijuana Capital

According to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health which was reported by the Washington Post, neither Colorado nor Washington are America’s marijuana capitals. Surprisingly, the tiny state of Rhode Island is where you’ll find highest percentage of people who smoke marijuana regularly in the US. Even though Colorado became the first state to legalize marijuana, one out of every eight Rhode Islanders over the age of 12 lights up on a monthly basis. 12.97 percent of people in Alaska smoke marijuana regularly, placing it a close second while Vermont rounds off the top three weed hotspots with 12.86 percent.
