Actor Sean Penn is under investigation for a Rolling Stone magazine interview with drug kingpin Joaquin Guzman, ABC News reported, citing unidentified people in the Mexican government.
Kate del Castillo, the Mexican actress whom Penn says helped arrange the meeting, is also being investigated, the report says. The U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment on the Rolling Stone story and whether the interview led to Guzman’s recapture by Mexican authorities on Friday, ABC says.

The head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, met Penn multi times in the Mexican wilderness jungle on top of a mountain, where they were surrounded by 100 of his henchmen as they spoke. Guzman, known as “El Chapo, ” mate Penn in October while he was on the run from the authorities, and had follow-up interviews by phone and video, the Rolling Stone said.
The raid of Guzmán’s residence in Mexico resulted in serious gunfire and left five suspects dead. Six suspects from the compound were also arrested. According to Mexican authorities, the raid was the work of six months of investigation and they initially were planning on storming Guzmán’s hideout in October – the same month Penn visited the cartel head – but decided to abort the mission because Guzmán was with women and children.
