Amazon started building its presence in Israel nearly two years ago, opening an office in Tel Aviv on January 1, 2014 to support the growth of its AWS cloud business and serve its rapidly expanding customer base of enterprises and start-ups.

The announcement took place at the AWS Summit in Tel Aviv which attracted over 2, 000 developers, technology professionals and Enterprise customers to learn more about AWS cloud computing technology.

The AWS business has rapid growth in the country and now counts some of Israel’s most well-known start-ups and fastest growing businesses as customers, including Wix, Kensho, Meerkat, Moovit, GetTaxi, Glide, Capriza, Iron Source, GameFly and Viber, as well as some of Israel’s most established enterprises such as Yes, Comverse, Bank Hapolim and Tadiran Telecom.

Amazon also opened a Research and Development (R&D) center in Israel and recently expanded its footprint with the acquisition of Annapurna Labs to take advantage of the wealth of engineering and technology talent in the country. The R&D center focuses on developing technologies for Amazon and supports innovation across all of the company’s businesses.

As Amazon continues its expansion in the country the company is hiring highly skilled employees, and advanced engineers, to develop and invent the next generation of technology, products and services for customers. At the Amazon Development Centers in Israel engineers are working on cameras for mobile devices, technologies for Amazon PrimeAir, to safely get packages into customers’ hands in 30 minutes or less and at Annapurna Labs they are focused on creating advanced networking and storage technologies.

“We have been active with Israeli customers through Amazon Web Services for years, working with them as they move to the cloud to be more innovative, agile, lower their costs, and scale their IT operations globally in minutes, ” said Werner Vogels, CTO and Vice President, Amazon.com. “During this time, we have been extremely impressed with the creativity and strong engineering talent available in the country. Locating the development of key parts of Amazon’s business in Israel further accelerates our efforts to deliver innovation to customers around the world.”

“We welcome Amazon’s continued investment in the Israeli technology community, ” says Avi Hasson, the Chief Scientist, Ministry of the Economy for the State of Israel. “Amazon’s technological pedigree strengthens the technology landscape across Israel. Israel is already recognized as a global hub of technological innovation with a large population of amazing researchers, great minds and highly skilled technological workers that creates a vibrant start-up scene. Having Amazon here is an important and valuable asset for Israel as we continue to build the country into a world leading center for technology development.”

The growth in Israel adds to Amazon’s expansion across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in the past few years.

In 2014 Amazon hired over 6, 000 people in EMEA and in recent years has opened offices and development centers in countries such as Germany, The Netherlands, UK, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Spain, Sweden and South Africa as well as numerous other locations.
