Price of Lauren Bacall’s Apt Dropped by $2.5 Million

Now even dead celebrities are having trouble selling their homes.

Lauren Bacall's Dakota

The estate of the late great actress Lauren Bacall has been forced to cut the asking price of her Manhattan condominium by $2.5 million. Located at the famed Dakota on Central Park West and 72nd Street, the apartment can now be had for only $23.5 million, down from the $26 million first listed.

What is happening with the value of celebrities’ homes in New York? Many including Mathew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker and Jonah Hill have been forced to slash the asking prices for their Manhattan digs just to get rid of them. The Broderick/Parker apartment was on the market for years.

Now even dead celebrities are having trouble selling their homes.

The actress, who died at the age of 89, lived for more than fifty years in her apartment at the famed luxurious apartment building, the Dakota, on 72nd Street and Central Park West . It is where she lived with her second husband, the actor Jason Robards, who she married after her first husband Humphrey Bogart passed away. Bacall bought the apartment in 1961 for all of $48, 000.

Her neighbors over the years there read like a who’s who of Hollywood stars including, Boris Karloff, Judy Holliday and Roberta Flack. It was also home to John Lennon who was about to enter it on that fateful night in December 1980 when he was murdered.

In 2005, Bacall told The New York Times about her neighbors, “There were other show people. Everyone used to know each other. It was a much warmer place. New York was a much more exciting city when it wasn’t all about money.”

The apartment was described in an interview that she gave Vanity Fair in 2011, as cavernous and on a high floor of the Dakota, 30 feet above the tree line, and having huge windows.

Located in the upper west side of Manhattan, The Dakota is a co-op apartment building at Central Park West on the corner of 72nd Street. Opened in 1884, the iconic building has had apartments sold there recently for as much as $30 million. It was declared a national historic landmark in 1976.
