Lapo Elkann dresses up NYC’s Mercer Streets with a touch of the odd

italia-independent_LAPO ELKANN

With all the flamboyance and bravura of Salvador Dali, Italy’s best-dressed gentleman, Lapo Elkann is opening up his own store on Mercer street in New York City, as reported by Vogue. Lapo, at 37, has been around awhile, but 37 is still young and so are his dynamic styles. Italia Independent will open its doors and will contain surprising, eccentric items that are guaranteed to catch the eye and wow the senses. On display will be denim-covered refrigerators, velvet eyewear, and clothing in unusual patterns, fabrics, textures and designs.

Style is in Elkann’s blood, as the grandson of Gianni Agnelli, founder of Fiat. Although raised a Roman Catholic, Elkann has mentioned more than once that he has some Jewish roots on his father’s side. Elkann established Italia Independent in 2007 in partnership with friends and associates Andrea Tessitore and Giovanni Accongiagioco in 2007, initially marketing a range of fashion products and accessories , gradually switching to focus mostly on eye wear. The company went public a couple of years ago.

While associated with Italy, Lapo Elkann says New York is “in his blood” since he was born and raised in the great American city. His grandfather’s work in the stylish auto industry has influenced Lapo’s fashions, such as eyewear made out of carbon.
