FLXfit technology

Israel’s Expanding Orthopedics Inc., a privately held medical device company focused on developing and commercializing innovative expandable devices for spine surgery, announced that the first US surgery with its FLXfit, the world’s only 3D expandable inter-body cage, has been successfully performed by Dr. John Peloza at the Texas Back Institute in Dallas.

Dr. John Peloza, an internationally-recognized orthopedic spine surgeon, said, “This surgery is a dramatic evolution of minimally invasive, spinal fusion procedure.”

He explained that, “most of the implants used from the posterior approach have significant limitations; they can’t cover enough of the disc space for good vertebral support and they lack an expansion mechanism enabling lordosis angle correction. The FLXfit, thanks to its articulated design, can be steered to the right position where we want it, covering a large area. In addition, it expands in the front of the disc space and restores the natural lordosis angle.”

Dr. Peloza noted: “It’s like a ship in a bottle. It can go in through a small tube and once we get it into position, we can expand it to create the biomechanical features we want with less muscle damage and quicker recovery for the patient.”

Dr. John Peloza has been at the forefront of minimally invasive spine surgery and has been selected as “Best Doctors in America” every year since 2001 among many other titles. The Texas Back Institute, established in 1977, is one of the largest and most important freestanding multispecialty spine clinics in the United States and in the world and has been leading spinal innovation since its inception.

Ofer Bokobza, CEO of Expanding Orthopedics, said that “We are extremely honored that Dr. Peloza and the TBI team, world renowned in spine care, have chosen the FLXfit to treat their patient and partnered up with EOI to achieve this significant milestone.”

Ofer added, “this is great introduction of the FLXfit in the US. We see a great demand for this unique technology from other leading surgeons and centers in the US and are ready for a successful proliferation of the product in 2015 across the country.”

Expanding Orthopedics Inc. is a medical device company developing and marketing innovative products designed to address unmet clinical needs for spine care and improve long-term patients’ outcome. The Company is and is backed by prominent spine surgeons. EOI owns a broad patent portfolio around anatomically fit, expandable devices for enhanced stability through a minimally invasive approach.
