The long awaiting unveiling of the Broad Museum of Art in L.A. has happened, and while the art it may someday house my be heavenly, many agree its exterior looks like it is from outer space. LAist pointed out that it looks like a honeycomb with an eye of a Sauron, or like a Hannibal Lector mask. The museum is located on Grand Avenue, and Broad Museum staff at least acknowledged what seems like a strange observation, that the whole in the center resembles an eye, by saying the design is called an Oculus.

The museum is a two story, 120, 000 square foot building designed by Diller, Scofidio + Renfro. The design was created with 2, 500 fiberglass panels and 650 tons of steel. There will also be a restaurant, a courtyard and skylights. Construction began in 2012, but was held up by many delays, as the original design plan had to be changed. The museum will house 2, 000 contemporary art pieces from the private collection of Eli and Edyth Broad. Eli Broad is an entrepreneur and philanthropist and is the only person to be the founder of two Fortune 500 companies. He was born in the Bronx to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. His father worked as a housepainter and his mother was a dressmaker. When the family moved to Michigan, Eli’s father was a union organizer and owned five and dime stores.
