Joaqin Phoenix Pranks Letterman Again

Joaquin Phoenix David Letterman

The eccentric – to say the least – actor Joaquin Phoenix has done it to David Letterman again. Phoenix, whose mother was Jewish, recently played yet another prank on the retiring king of late night television.

This time, while appearing on CBS’ Late Show, Phoenix told Letterman that he was engaged to marry his yoga instructor.

The 40 year old actor gave an elaborate description and demonstration of a yoga move that he practiced with her called harnessing the hog during which he got up from his seat and went down onto the floor. Then he said, “I think she’s the one. We started dating. I proposed to her and we’re getting married.”

But the actor then retracted his statement the next morning when he appeared on Good Morning America.

“So your’e getting married?” asked Letterman.

“So far, if everything works out, ” answered Phoenix.

As Phoenix told host George Stephanopoulos, “I think like my life’s so boring, and it seemed like something exciting to talk about, and I wanted the audience to like me. They really like people getting married. I can get engaged again, if you like?”

“It was a joke, ” Phoenix’s publicist told the Independent, “Joaquin has an extraordinary and spontaneous sense of humor, but it is not true.”

What is most surprising is that Joaquin Phoenix is even welcome on David Letterman’s show anymore after the stunt that he pulled on Late Show back in 2010. While promoting the faux documentary about himself directed by his brother-in-law Casey Affleck (Ben’s brother), Phoenix famously acted dazed and confused during his interview while sporting a long unkempt beard.
