The two leaders spoke over the phone on Thursday, a day after Jordan recalled its ambassador to Israel to protest what it called an “unacceptable” Israeli police assault on a disputed hilltop compound in Jerusalem’s Old City, revered by Jews and Muslims.

Violence erupted at the site Wednesday after a group of religious Jews tried to visit. Muslims consider such visits a provocation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he reiterated Israel’s commitment to “preserve the status quo” at the site.

The statement said “both leaders called for an immediate end to all acts of violence and incitement.”
