Watch a Jon Stewart interview with filmmaker Ben Steele on The Daily Show to discuss his new documentary Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia. The film, exposing gangs that attack LGBT, is airing Oct. 7 on HBO.
Steele said: “The vigilante groups are, unfortunately, they’re proud of what they do. They believe that they are carrying out good acts and they believe they are acting in the name of the majority of Russian people.”

The filmmaker told Steward he was allowed to film those vigilantes after a long negotiation process. He convinced them he was there “not to pass judgment — I’m there to film what’s happening so that I can show it to the rest of the world, and it’s for the viewer to judge the rights and the wrongs and the merits of what they’re doing.”
