Sheldon Adelson Backed Anti-Online Poker Bill Faces Criticism in Virginia

Casino Magnate Sheldon Adelson Addresses Hospitality Students At UNLV

Kevin Carroll, head of the Fraternal Order of Police in Virginia, is taking a hit against an anti-online gambling bill backed by Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson. Carroll issued a statement saying that as a resident of Virginia, home of U.S. civil liberties, he objected to a law that would roll back the 2011 Wire Act, which outlawed online forms of sports betting, to prohibit other forms of gambling, such as poker. Carroll said that Virginia, the home of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and James Madison, will not tolerate violation of personal freedoms, and added, “It is so perplexing that any Virginian would allow Congress to step on Virginia’s right to regulate online gambling. As a Virginian and a law enforcement officer, this is a recipe for disaster.”
