Charles Cohen Awarded The Ordre National Du Mérite By President François Hollande Of France

Cohen, president of the Cohen Media Group, who distributes largely independently produced films from all over the world, and is being honored for his contribution to the French film industry.

Charles Cohen, president of the Cohen Media Group, is having his efforts recognized as  the largest United States-based distributor of French films, by being awarded the Ordre national du Mérite by the French President François Hollande.

Among the films about be distributed by the Cohen Media Group in the United States are Chinese Puzzle, starring Audrey Tautou, Le Chef, starring Jean Reno,  and On My Way, starring Catherine Deneuve. On My Way is due to open in New York within the coming days.

Expressing his delight at receiving the award, Charles  Cohen, in a prepared statement, went on to add that response in the United States to independently produced foreign films, particularly the French classics, has been outstanding.

The Ordre national du Mérite, or the National Order of Merit was established in more than 50 years ago by the late President Charles de Gaulle, in order to recognize not only French citizens but also foreign nationals. Cohen is one of a number of Americans have been recipients of the award, mostly from a military background, with one of the most recent being General Wesley Clark, who was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO during the years 1997 to 2000.

Charles Cohen, a wealthy New York-based real estate developer diversified his business interests by forming  Cohen Media Group in 2008. Cohen Media Group has been responsible for the production of a number of critically acclaimed independent films, while Cohen enjoyed particular success as executive producer for Frozen River, which was awarded the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Drama, as well as  two Independent Spirit Awards and even an Oscar nomination.

 

Charles Cohen graduated from Tufts University, later going on to gain his law degree from Brooklyn Law School.

Cohen began his professional career working in the family real estate business, Cohen Brothers Realty Corporation where he has gone on to reach the role of president and chief executive of the company which owns more than 12 million square feet of commercial real estate.

Despite his busy schedule Charles Cohen finds the  time to perform a number of public services, amongst them being a member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art among a  large number of artistic bodies

Cohen is also a holder of the Israel Peace Medal, which he was awarded in 2002, as well as being honored by B’nai B’rith International for his services to the Jewish people.
