Google continues its buying streak with the acquisition of a fifth Israeli company, SlickLogin • The three-person company developed tools to verify user identity through audio signals sent from a smartphone application.

Google has just acquired Israeli tech start-up SlickLogin, a move confirmed on the SlickLogin company website, and also by Google.

SlickLogin was formed to get rid of endless insertion of passwords when you visit an external website on your computer. It allows you to log into a website, just by holding your phone close to it.

Simple and slick in concept, the product aims to verify a user’s identity and log them in to a website by playing a uniquely generated, nearly-silent high frequency sound, one that the human ear cannot hear, through your computer’s speakers. The SlickLogin app on your phone hears the sound, analyzes it, then returns the signal back to the website confirming that you are who you are supposed to be – unless you just stole the phone.

Use of high frequency sound is already on the menu in other high-tech areas, but not yet for login and verification, which is why Google has picked them up.

Whether the product is up to scratch in relation to personal security issues remains to be seen, though the company’s three founders all come from a defense and security background – that figures – so they should be up there.
