Like every writer that dreams of making it big in the movie business, Judd Apatow recalls his first days of trying to break through and get that vital first assignment.
In Judd’s case it was more than 20 years ago, and he kept himself busy sending his resume to all of the leading film and TV studios. Apatow succeeded in getting a response from Mike Reiss and Al Jean, producers of the hit cartoon show The Simpsons. Reiss and Jean apparently felt that Judd had something to offer and have signed him up to write a trial episode for the show.
However after reviewing Apatow’s script, Reiss and Jean decided not to take it up, and it lay gathering dust at Fox Studios where the series was created. That was until a year or so ago when Al Jean happened to come across a magazine interview given by Apatow, in which he mentioned his disappointment that the episode he written for the Simpsons had not ever hit the TV screen.
Later Judd explained his disappointment at having his writing efforts rejected because the content of that particular was based around the premise of a person or people trying hard not to grow up, as Homer Simpson was trying to do in his script, after being hypnotized by a doctor to arrive at the same the mindset of 10-year Bart Simpson.
Unfortunately before the doctor could return Homer’s brain to its previous state, he was taken ill and Homer had to remain an adult with a small boy’s brain for too long a time.
Al Jean obviously took Judd’s words to heart because he dug out the script he had sent in all these years ago, dusted it off, and saw the message that was being put across. Now twenty years later, the episode is being included, albeit with a few updates in the next series of the Simpsons, now in its 25th year, having created no less than 538 episodes to date.
Before Apatow’s creation hits the screen, he has been given a taste of life behind the scenes, along with his good friends Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen among others, doing voice overs on the next episode of the “The Simpsons, aptly entitled ” “Don’t Steal This Episode”.
