Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both. It can leave you feeling tired and irritable during the day. Acute insomnia lasts for a short period of time, usually less than a few weeks. It is often caused by stress, anxiety, or a change in sleep schedule. Chronic insomnia5 lasts for a longer period of time, usually three nights or more per week for at least three months. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including medical conditions, mental health conditions, and lifestyle habits.

According to the researchers, sexual activity, sexual function and sexual satisfaction all have relationships with sleep, individuals with insomnia have more sexual dysfunction than those without insomnia and women’s sexual function in particular is strongly associated with insomnia.

They studied 618 men and 648 women who were recruited via Prolific, an online survey platform. The Sleep and Sex Survey II included measures addressing insomnia, fear of sleep, nightmares, sexual function, sexual satisfaction, sexual activity, depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and alcohol use.

The scientists found that engaging in sexual activity recently was correlated with better sleep and lower anxiety.

Their findings, they said, support a relationship of insomnia to sexual function and satisfaction with some gender differences. Future work may be enhanced by assessing these relationships in a gender diverse population including objective sleep measures and addressing contributing mechanisms. Clinically, findings support the assessment of sleep when evaluating patients for sexual dysfunction.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Wilfred Pigeon of the University of Rochester, told The Sun that the study showed “a relationship of insomnia to sexual function and satisfaction with some gender differences.”

“Women had approximately twice the rate of both sexual dysfunction and insomnia as that experienced by men,” he added. “The presence of clinical insomnia was strongly associated with poorer sexual function in both men and women.”
