Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant met with U.S. Senior Advisor to President Joe Biden Amos Hochstein at the Ministry of Defense Headquarters in Tel Aviv Sunday night. Hochstein is in Israel to convey to Israeli leaders the Biden Administration’s concerns that the current tension with the terrorist group Hezbollah could expand into a second war.

Since the start of the Iron Swords War in Gaza Hezbollah has been firing rockets indiscriminately at civilian targets in Israel from its bases in Lebanon. Most have either been intercepted by Israeli defenses or fell harmlessly in open areas, but some did strike building in Israeli towns. After each rocket launch Israel has retaliated by striking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

And recently, terrorist killed three U.S. Servicemen in an attack on an American military outpost in Jordan. The U.S. responded with an attack on a number of terrorist targets in Iraq.

Iranian backed terrorists have been attacking American military position in the region since the start of the war in Gaza. Houthi terrorists in Yemen, who are backed by Iran, have been launching missiles at shipping in the Red Sea and even attacked U.S. naval vessels there. All of this has fueled concerns that the war in Gaza could spark a regional conflict.

Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant told Hochstein, “We are committed to our citizens. We are ready to resolve this crisis via diplomatic understandings, however we are also prepared for any other scenario.”

Minister Gallant emphasized the commitment of the State of Israel to “improving the security situation along Israel’s northern border, which includes removing the threats of infiltration and fire from Lebanon.”

The parties discussed the need to change the security situation in the northern arena and reflected on ways to safely return Israel’s displaced communities to their homes in the north.

Minister Gallant also expressed his appreciation to Advisor Hochstein for his personal role and the U.S. Administration’s leadership in addressing security issues in the northern arena.

Amos J. Hochstein is the Special Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security. He previously served as the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State for Global Energy Security.
