Dave Portnoy is betting on sports again and is winning big. And University of Michigan football fans can benefit from Portnoy’s successes. Michigan is his alma mater.
The founder of Barstool Sports won $1 million on his bet when the University of Michigan Wolverines defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide in overtime at the Rose Bowl last week by a score of 27 – 20. This was Dave Portnoy’s first big bet after he claimed to quit gambling back in November due to some big losses.
Portnoy tweeted after the victory, “MICHIGAN WINS THE ROSE BOWL! I WIN A MILLION DOLLARS! WE’RE PLAYING FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! LET’S FUCKING GO!”

“Listen I’ve had a pretty good run for the past 2 decades,” Dave Portnoy wrote in a blog post on his Barstool Sports. “I’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars. Boston sports teams have won like 9,000 titles. Everything has seemingly bounced my way. But my god 2024 is setting up for maybe my best year yet. We’re not even 48 hours into the New Year and Michigan has already won the Rose Bowl.”
And to celebrate Dave Portnoy promised to take four Michigan fans on an all expense paid trip to the national championship game to be held in Houston Monday night where Michigan will face Washington.
“Ok as always the hardest part of these contests is picking the winners cause there were so many worthy entries,” Portnoy wrote on his blog. “I wish I could just take all Wolverine fans to the game with me. The good news is that our friends at Gametime upped the anti and gave me 8 more tickets to the game because there were so many worthy stories. So without further ado here is who we are taking to Houston with us…”
Michigan last won the NCAA football national championship in 1997, but that was before the NCAA implemented the final four team playoff system.
Dave Portnoy also won $500,000 on his bet on Washington to win its playoff against. Washington defeated the Texas Longhorns 37 – 31 last week at the Sugar Bowl.
