OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot that was founded by Sam Altman, entered into a partnership with the publishing house Axel Springer on a “deeper integration of journalism in AI technologies.” The partnership will see OpenAI pay websites like Politico and Business Insider for the use of their content with its ChatGPT AI content creator.

In addition, the partnership supports Axel Springer’s existing AI-driven ventures that build upon OpenAI’s technology. The sides added that the collaboration also involves the use of “quality content” from Axel Springer media brands for advancing the training of OpenAI’s sophisticated large language models.

The value of the deal was not revealed and it comes after a number of prominent writers and celebrities filed copyright infringement suits against OpenAI that claim ChatGPT uses their work without compensation.

In September, none other than Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, David Baldacci, Sylvia Day, Jonathan Franzen and more brought a suit alleging that the AI-driven editing and rewriting tech provided by OpenAI is guilty of “systematic theft on a mass scale” since it helps people reuse their copyrighted materials without permission.

And comedian Sarah Silverman filed a similar lawsuit in July.

So, perhaps this is why OpenAI is now looking to cut such deals, paying firms in advance for the use of their content.

“This partnership with Axel Springer will help provide people with new ways to access quality, real-time news content through our AI tools. We are deeply committed to working with publishers and creators around the world and ensuring they benefit from advanced AI technology and new revenue models,” said Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI.

Axel Springer is a media and technology company active in more than 40 countries. By providing information across its diverse media brands (among others BILD, WELT, INSIDER, POLITICO) and classifieds portals (StepStone Group and AVIV Group) Axel Springer SE “empowers people to make free decisions for their lives.” Today, the transformation from a traditional print media company to Europe’s leading digital publisher has been successfully accomplished. The company is headquartered in Berlin and employs more than 18,000 people worldwide.

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research and implementation organization based in the United States. It was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and several others. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all humanity.
