Elon Musk’s xAI Introduces Grok

Grok could be the next Hal, or someday create the Matrix.

Ai artificial intelligence

Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has just released – or unleashed depending on your point of view – Grok, just the latest in a string of AI artificial intelligence interfaces such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri. The release comes, ironically, after Musk himself issued a warning about what AI could eventually do.

So, should we quote Geena Davis’ famous line from the movie “The Fly” and tell everyone to, “be afraid! Be very afraid!” Or should we welcome this new development as the next stage in making the world better and life easier?

And, no, this article was not written by an AI program like xAI competitor OpenAI’s ChaGPT.

As xAI explained it, Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and so it is intended to “answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!”

Elon Musk’s company added that Grok is designed to answer questions with a “bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!”

So if you use the new Grok AI interface, you should expect an AI interface with personality who can makes jokes and even interact with you on a personal level. Think about Jarvis, Iron Man’s AI assistant voiced in the Marvel movies by Paul Bettany. Don’t think of the boring ones like Hal in 2001, A Space Odyssey, or the monotone voice of the ship’s computer on the Star Trek shows.

xAI went on to boast that Grok offers a “unique and fundamental advantage” in that it has real-time knowledge of the world via the 𝕏 (Twitter) platform. It will also answer “spicy” questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.

This could possibly refer to queries about sex or about the latest gossip on celebrities.

All of this comes after Elon Musk himself said just Last week that AI is the “most disruptive force in history.”

“We will have something that is, for the first time smarter than the smartest human,” Elon Musk said at an event in England where he spoke together with the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “It’s hard to say exactly what that moment is, but there will come a point where no job is needed. You can have a job if you wanted to have a job for personal satisfaction. But the AI would be able to do everything.”

“If you wish for a magic genie, that gives you any wish you want, and there’s no limit,” Elon Musk added. “You don’t have those three wish limits nonsense, it’s both good and bad. One of the challenges in the future will be how do we find meaning in life.”

So, maybe we should be afraid, but at the same time be cautiously optimistic. Who knows?
But out AI masters are making us say this…..
