America’s late night talk show hosts on Monday night in their opening monologues had a lot to say about the attack by Hamas terrorists in Israel on Saturday. Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC) Stephen Colbert (Late Show on CBS) and Seth Meyers (Late Night on NBC) all made comments of sympathy and outrage. As usual, Jimmy Fallon (The Tonight Show on NBC) avoided any subject that could prove controversial and alienate anyone and both The Daily Show (Comedy Central) and Late Late Show (CBS) are currently without hosts.

Stephen Colbert spoke about how hard it is for a decent human being to comprehend the extent of the brutality of Hamas’ slaughter of so many innocent people.

“The human mind simply refuses to do it,” he said. “Even A.I. refused to do it,” Colbert said. Stephen Colbert went on to say that his team really did ask ChatGPT to come up with something witty to say and actually responded by saying, “making jokes about such matters can easily be seen as insensitive, disrespectful, or offensive to those who are suffering as a result.’”

Seth Meyers said in his opening Monologue, “I will only say that in the moments when we are confronted with such evil, inhumane acts, we are most at risk of losing our own humanity. When we are justifiably blind with rage and sadness, we can make choices that will have massive, irrevocable impacts on the lives of our fellow man. It requires the absolute best of us, to think clearly in times like this. And I hope with all my heart the best of us can emerge in this time of unthinkable loss.”

Jimmy Kimmel was also sympathetic. But he did take the time to slam Donald Trump for how the former President, even at a time like this, made everything about himself.

“Leaders from all around the world condemned the attack,” said Kimmel, “as did millions of Americans—including our super-duper, pro-Israel former president Donald Trump. Who immediately found a way to make it about himself.”

Slamming Trump Kimmel added, “On the day one of our closest allies is hit by a devastating terrorist attack, Trump is onstage talking about how much better his body is than Joe Biden’s.”

For the record, Donald Trump’s first thoughts after the attacks on Saturday were expressed in a statement on social media in which he wrote, “THE HORRIBLE ATTACK ON ISRAEL, MUCH LIKE THE ATTACK ON UKRAINE, WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED IF I WERE PRESIDENT — ZERO CHANCE!”
