Rock and Roll Hall of Fame $100 Million Expansion Approved

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland got the green light to move ahead with its planned $100 million expansion. At a meeting, the Cleveland Planning Commission unanimously approved the plan for the 50,000-square-foot expansion for the monument to rock.

“We’re in our 28th year, we’ve had 14 million guests and we’ve had a $2 billion economic impact to the region,” said Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris at a public hearing held by the commission. “One of the reasons for being here today is because we want to expand the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to better serve our community, to better grow our audiences, and to have a more positive effect on Cleveland.”

Practice for Architecture and Urbanism designed the new facility that will sit on a one acre plot of land. PAU explains that its design was selected on the strength of its “distinct palimpsest design approach that reimagined and extended Pei’s architecture.” Instead of creating a wholly separate object, PAU’s design brings “new life and dimension to Pei’s original pyramid as well as the larger site, with new internal and external public spaces intended to immerse visitors in the future of Rock & Roll.”

The expansion will roughly double the size of the museum, including a new entry lobby and public space; an acoustically-designed and sub-divisible performance, classroom, and 1,350-person event venue; reinvented permanent and temporary exhibition space; new food and beverage offerings; replacement office space; and a complete rethinking of circulation systems that extend into the landscape.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a museum and hall of fame located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States, on the shore of Lake Erie. The museum documents the history of rock music and the artists, producers, engineers, and other notable figures and personnel who have influenced its development.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established on April 20, 1983, by Ahmet Ertegun, founder and chairman of Atlantic Records. After a long search for the right city, Cleveland was chosen in 1986 as the Hall of Fame’s permanent home. Architect I. M. Pei designed the new museum, and it was dedicated on September 1, 1995.

It has inducted over 500 artists, producers, engineers, and other industry figures. The process for induction is overseen by a committee of music journalists, historians, and industry experts. Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a popular tourist destination, attracting over 700,000 visitors each year. The museum features exhibits on the history of rock music, as well as interactive displays and artifacts from some of the biggest names in the genre.

The 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on November 3, 2023. The inductees for 2023 are Kate Bush, Chaka Khan, Rage Against the Machine and Don Cornelius.
