Israeli Scientists Breed Chickens that Only Lay Female Chicken Eggs

Poultry by Huminn

Poultry by Huminn (formerly known as NRS Poultry) is an Israeli agtech startup that has somehow found a way to breed chickens that only lay female eggs. This is – to say the least – an interesting breakthrough. Feminists the world over will certainly see this as a step to life without men – so men watch out.

But how can you have just females with no male to fertilize the eggs? Well, there will still be a need for roosters to rule the roost, so to speak. But what is the advantage here?

Huminn says that the advantage here is breeders can now benefit from an increase in production volume and efficiency by freeing up significant incubation space, without any changes to the manufacturing process or additional machinery; Significant cost reduction related to the egg sorting process (human and machine); And accelerate production process by reducing the volume of eggs transferred into incubators.

But this may all be moot as the world moves toward alternatives to animal based products like eggs and poultry. And Israel has a great many firms developing alternative foods, including both chicken and egg replacements.

Yo! Egg, an Israeli foodtech startup that offers a plant-based egg alternative, recently closed a $5 million round of seed funding. The company will now use the capital to help it launch the world’s first plant-based, sunny-side-up and poached egg in restaurants across the US. Yo! Egg boasts that it plans to transform the egg industry, sans chickens. The company sees a huge opportunity for positive change by offering a new generation of plant-based eggs that fully deliver from a sensory perspective.

And Israeli startup Redefine Meat develops meat substitutes with 3D printing that it says tastes just like the real thing.

Also, producing only females as Huminn has done does not seem to do anything about the complaints raised over cruelty to animals regarding how chickens are kept in cages and are treated in general. Some countries are even moving to ban the way in which chickens are kept.

In June, Israel passed a new law that will prohibit holding chickens in cages beginning in 2037. Israel is one of the first 18 countries in the world to ban the use of cages for laying hens. The 2022 Animal Welfare Regulations (The rearing and keeping of laying hens) were approved by the Knesset’s Education Committee.

Founded by Sam Salman and Eli Mor, Poultry by Huminn is a subsidiary of Huminn which creates and develops scientific breakthroughs to tackle persistent global challenges in health, food production and agriculture. Huminn scientists and researchers work collaboratively with leading centers of excellence around the world, including in a joint venture with the Agriculture Research Organization (ARO) – the Ministry of agriculture of the State of Israel.
