The show’s star and Executive Producer Mindy Kaling (formerly of NBC’s The Office) welcomed the additional character’s arrival this week at the Television Critics Association summer press tour:

“The wonderful thing about the character is the trope of the mother-in-law-type figure who doesn’t like the girl is so pervasive, it’s like, ‘OK, how do we do a new spin on this?’” Mindy told reporters.

Mama C will definitely clash with Mindy and Danny, she promised. “As Danny has said, ‘I don’t know how to please that woman.’ So we haven’t ignored her own relationship with her two sons. So we really explore a lot.”

The role might reunite Perlman with her former Cheers co-star Dan Hedaya, who played Carla Tortelli the waitress’ ex-husband, and who appeared on The Mindy Project in Season 2 as Danny’s dad—and Annette’s ex-husband—Alan.

The plots thicken, don’t they now.
