What Lyve’s Tim Bucher Learned From Dell, Jobs and Gates

Tim Bucher

Tim Bucher has worked with the greats in the tech industry: Steve Jobs, Michael Dell and Bill Gates, and learned unique lessons from each. Bucher is CEO of a photo storage and sharing app called Lyve, and told the Business Insider about what it was like to work with Dell, Gates and Jobs.

With Michael Dell, Bucher was VP of consumer software after Dell bought his company ZING. Dell had a leadership style that was flexible enough that it allowed him to relate to team members at their level and to see things from their vantage point. Dell would talk through the details with employees, and would often get quite involved and technical. Bucher also said the attention Dell paid to cost was something essential to learn from.

Bill Gates, on the other hand, was more intellectual than personal, as Bucher discovered when he was VP of consumer products for Microsoft. Jobs was more of a tempermental genius who would often berate people if they didn’t “get”him but Jobs undeniably had an “amazing product sense.”

“In a nutshell, Bucher says Gates taught him it was all about software, Jobs taught him it was all about design, and Dell taught him it was all about cost, ” writes Jillian D’Onfo at the Business Insider. Bucher comments, “If you take those three things together, it’s very powerful in today’s consumer world.”
